How To Be A Confident Public Speaker

consistent practice deliberate practice effective communication overcome fear presentation skills public speaking speak up Mar 13, 2025

Public speaking is one of the most common fears in the world. If you're someone who dreads the thought of speaking in front of a group—whether it's at work, in a social setting, or in a professional presentation—you’re definitely not alone. But what if I told you that I used to be terrified of public speaking too? And now, it’s something I do regularly, both for my business and my personal growth.

In this blog post, I’m going to share with you the three key principles that not only helped me overcome my fear of public speaking but turned me into someone who is now sought after as a speaker. And the best part? These principles can work for anyone, whether you're speaking in a meeting or delivering a speech in front of hundreds of people.

From Terrified to Toastmasters Speaker of the Year

I know how it feels to be utterly terrified when it comes to public speaking. I would freeze up, my mind would go blank, and I'd be acutely aware of how awkward and uncomfortable I felt in front of others. But fast forward to today, and I’m a Toastmasters Speaker of the Year and a regular speaker at conferences.

It’s been a journey, but the transformation started when I embraced three core principles that allowed me to go from panic-stricken to confident.

Principle #1: The Power of Consistent Practice

The first key to mastering public speaking is simple but incredibly effective: practice. But not just any kind of practice—consistent, deliberate practice. Just like any skill, speaking in public becomes easier the more you do it.

I started small, speaking in front of small groups or even in front of a mirror. The key was to make it a habit, so when it was time for the big moment, I was comfortable and prepared. You don’t have to start with an auditorium full of people. Start by speaking in meetings or at family gatherings. Each step you take will build your confidence.

Public speaking is a skill that can be developed by embracing consistent practice.

Principle #2: Change Your Focus From Yourself to Your Message

If you’re like most people, the reason you get nervous before speaking is because you're too focused on how you’re being perceived. It’s natural to be concerned about judgment and whether you’ll make a mistake. But here's a game-changing insight: shift your focus from yourself to the message you want to deliver.

When you focus on what you want to share—whether it's a valuable idea, an exciting project, or a solution to a problem—you start to feel more confident because you realize it’s not about you; it’s about your message and how it can help others.

Principle #3: Embrace Discomfort as Part of Growth

Here’s the truth: You can’t avoid discomfort when it comes to public speaking. But here’s the secret: embrace that discomfort. Every great public speaker has felt nervous or uncomfortable at one point or another. It’s not about eliminating that feeling but learning how to move through it.

Confidence comes from embracing discomfort—not avoiding it.

When you allow yourself to feel the nerves and keep going, that’s when real growth happens. And the more you do it, the less discomfort you’ll feel. It becomes a natural part of your process.

Final Thoughts: You Can Do This

If you’re currently struggling with social anxiety or the fear of public speaking, know that it is completely possible to overcome. The journey is not about “suddenly” being a great speaker; it’s about incrementally building the skills, mindset, and confidence that will carry you through.

Remember, I was once in your shoes. And now, I’m not just a confident speaker—I’m someone who actually enjoys it and thrives in those moments.

So if you’re ready to take the first step towards becoming a confident public speaker, start practicing, shift your focus, and embrace the discomfort of growth. And just like I did, you can go from terrified to confident, and maybe even become a Toastmasters Speaker of the Year yourself.

You’ve got this. Keep taking action, and you'll be amazed at how quickly you can transform.
