When You Lose Confidence At Work (Do This First)
Oct 22, 2025Have you ever hit a point in your career where you just… lost your edge?
That spark that once made you unstoppable suddenly flickers out. You start second-guessing yourself, overanalyzing your every move, and quietly wondering, “What happened to me?”
Maybe it was a bad presentation, a harsh email from your boss, or a project that went sideways. Or maybe nothing “big” happened at all — you just woke up one morning feeling flat, small, and uncertain.
Here’s the good news: this is not permanent.
You can rebuild your confidence — and come back stronger than ever.
See the Moment for What It Really Is
When you lose confidence, it’s easy to think something new has gone wrong. But it hasn’t. What’s really happening is that an old, familiar voice — what I call the Safety Police — has resurfaced.
That voice whispers,
“Don’t take risks.”
“Stay small.”
“Don’t draw attention to yourself.”
And when you make a mistake or get criticized, that voice pounces. It tells you that failure proves you’re not good enough — and suddenly you believe it.
But here’s the truth: the mistake isn’t the problem. Believing that voice is.
This voice has been waiting in the shadows, hoping for its moment to pull you back into self-doubt. The first step to reclaiming your confidence is simply to notice it and say:
“Wait a minute. I know this tune. I’ve heard it before — and I’m not dancing to it anymore.”
Reclaim Your Inner Authority
Confidence isn’t something you “earn” — it’s something you remember.
In the moment you stand taller, breathe deeper, and decide, “Enough. I’m steering this ship again,” you’ve already begun to rebuild it.
Every great leader, creator, or professional you admire has faced setbacks. What separates them isn’t that they never fall — it’s that they refuse to let the fall define them.
So take your setback and give it new meaning. Ask yourself,
“What if this isn’t the end of my story? What if this is the turning point?”
That simple reframe can transform a perceived failure into the very catalyst that propels you forward.
Choose Growth Over Shrinking
The fastest way to destroy confidence is to stop taking action.
Avoiding risk feels safe in the moment, but it quietly kills your power. Speaking up in meetings, taking ownership of mistakes, volunteering for that new project — those are the acts that rebuild trust in yourself.
Remember: every experience is neutral until you decide what it means.
If you label it a failure, you shrink. If you label it feedback, you grow.
You Are the Captain of Your Ship
No boss, no client, no setback gets to decide your worth. You do.
Right now, you have a choice: keep believing the voice that tells you to stay small — or defy it.
Stand up. Breathe deep. Reclaim your authority.
Because your confidence isn’t gone, it’s waiting for you to step back into it.
